I think that the intention of Telnet task B was to highlight the various capabilities of Telnet. As per instructions, connected to towel.blinkenlights.nl via Telnet.
After some information about the author etc, a Star Wars movie/animation appeared. The animation was quite funny and kept me entertained. The animation involved using numbers and symbols to create the star wars characters and I must say that I found it to be quite clever.
This task gave a good example of using a computer as a medium displaying images as well as text and numbers to communicate information via animating dots and dashes The various software applications available on the market today probably makes this animation look outdated but proves the theory that information can be packaged using a variety of formats.
I actually prefer the current graphics and multimedia applications available today as the imaging is definitely sharper, realistic, user friendly and with a more modern flair about it.
The technical issues associated with Telnet is that it is not user friendly, is only text/command based and limited in operation. This is a screen shot of Star Wars in Telnet.
The most common uses for Telnet today are gaming sites, seeking information from government databases, and libraries (just as we have done in these tasks, and sending email the hard way(maybe). It also appears to be the latest form of getting free movies according to some sources.
I did not realise that this was going to take me this long to do a write up about Telnet.
Cheers
Ash
