INTERNET TOOLS

As instructed visited http://network-tools.com/ and performed a traceroute to curtin.edu.au which can be confirmed by the following screen shot.

Traceroute to 134.7.179.53 [curtin.edu.au] involved a total of 21 Hops but had 3 Timeouts so not sure whether its to be included or excluded.

The second part of the question is asking "what is the average time in milliseconds from the tools site to the curtin server"?

My answer would be that with the Timeouts, its 261ms and if the Timeouts are excluded then its 264 ms.

The IP Number of the host name [curtin.edu.au] is 134.7.179.53 .

Further Exploration

For the first task, visited http://visualroute.visualware.com/ and downloaded VisualRoute 2008 software and performed a visual traceroute from my computer to webct.curtin.edu.au. From this software it took 88ms compared to the 261 ms from http://network-tools.com/ . The VisualRoute 2008 was obviously much faster.

The above screen shots show how versatile the VisualRoute software is and the amount of indepth information it provides.

For the second part performed a traceroute from my computer to curtin.edu.au and this time the hops were 18 including 5 Timeouts compared to 21 Hops and 3 Timeouts previously.

The only difference observed was that it took less hops and time to traceroute a site from my computer.

The only use I may have for this Internet tool would be to trace an IP address or a host. Overall the exercise was simple and pretty straight forward.

  1. Hi Ash,

WOW......After reading your feelings on webct about how nervous you were with creating a blog, you have gone great. Your blog is great and you have obviously already completed so many tasks (more than me anyway). Congrats
